Like a girl, a cha cha cha for life

They said girls need to dress properly, I followed the advice and cared about preppy clothes. They said girls need to behave properly, I started using more polite words, acting more like a girl. They said girls need to have beautiful hair, I bought all of the hair products. They said girls ought to be pretty, I ran in for all sorts of cosmetic. They said girls ought to be slim, I fell for the diet products.

But all the things they said about girls just affected my perceptions of how a girl has to be. I lost the connection between how a girl is and how the society wants her to be. So I started asking myself the question, is a girl only worth being admired for her beauty, asthetic or otherwise being rejected as an outcast? When did act like a girl or cry like a girl become something negative? If you are a girl how are you supposed to act, rather than like a girl? Why are girls mostly known for their beauty? I do not know when “like a girl” beacame a thing, but it certainly has. And it has made it’s way through the history.

Now, I know there are a lot of people who find it very important to let girls be girls and boys be boys without putting in too much of political correctness to the whole topic. But is it fair to prime all the little ones on perceptions that the society created? Is it fair to make little boys feel insecure just because they love tiny pinky fluffly little plushy? Is it fair to make little girls feel uncomfortable just because they love video games and short and edgy hairstyles? I guess not. Maybe it’s time to rethink former nemesis. Maybe it’s time to let little boys love ballet and little girls practice kick ass sports. Maybe it’s time to let us all just be.

It’s time to let all the little boys and girls choose to live and grow up to whatever and whoever they want to be. For sure some might think this might result in disastrous paradgim shift and lost of identitiy of our society. But me, I think it’s somewhat like dancing cha cha cha, you take a step forward and then you go backward and then you repeat the whole thing over and over again. And at the end you realize, what a great night you had!
